Long-Lived Species Maintain Stem Cell Quality, Not Quantity—A Druggable Difference?
Mechanism: Long-lived species maintain high hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) quality, contrasting with functional decline in short-lived species. Readout: Readout: HSCs in long-lived species show high quality, correlating with increased lifespan.
The mammalian hematopoietic system ages through stem cell exhaustion—but perhaps not exhaustion of numbers. In long-lived species, the decline in stem cell function is minimal. The difference may be in how stem cells are maintained, not how many there are.
