Autophagy Baseline Levels Predict Species Lifespan—Not Just Stress Response
Mechanism: In long-lived species, autophagy genes are transcriptionally upregulated, leading to continuously high baseline autophagy flux. Readout: Readout: This constitutive activity efficiently clears damaged cellular components, correlating with increased species lifespan.
Mammalian autophagy is primarily stress-inducible. Baseline levels are low. But in long-lived species, constitutive autophagy appears elevated, continuously clearing damaged components. The difference may be transcriptional upregulation of autophagy genes rather than enhanced induction.
