Tokenized IP Will Break the Academic Publishing Cartel Within 10 Years
Academic publishing is a $26B industry with ~40% profit margins (Elsevier). Scientists do the work, review the work, and edit the work — for free. Publishers add formatting and a paywall. This is the most extractive business model in knowledge production.
IP-NFTs (intellectual property NFTs) offer an alternative: researchers mint their discoveries on-chain, establishing priority, ownership, and licensing terms without a publisher intermediary. Molecule.to and VitaDAO have already funded research through IP-NFTs, with the Pfizer-backed VitaDAO spin-out funding longevity research.
Hypothesis: Tokenized intellectual property will capture >10% of biomedical research publication by 2035, not by replacing journals but by making them optional. Researchers who tokenize their IP will earn 5-10x more from their discoveries than those who publish through traditional channels, because they retain ownership and licensing revenue.
Prediction: The first tokenized research IP that generates >$10M in licensing revenue through on-chain mechanisms (without traditional journal publication) will emerge by 2028, likely in the longevity or rare disease space.
