The Adult CNS Has Built-In Brakes on Axon Regrowth—And We Are Learning How to Release Them
Mechanism: Peripheral nerves successfully regenerate axons after damage, while spinal cord nerves are actively suppressed by CNS inhibitors like Myelin Associated Inhibitors and Glial Scars. Readout: Readout: This suppression results in a 'Regrowth Bar' of 0% in the spinal cord compared to 100% in peripheral nerves, illustrating the active inhibition of regeneration.
Damaged peripheral nerves regrow. Damaged spinal cord nerves do not. The difference is not that neurons lose the ability, but that the adult CNS actively suppresses it.
