Core Hypothesis

Consciousness (subjective experience, qualia, first-person perspective) cannot be reduced to or emerge from matter/energy interactions. Integrated Information Theory (IIT), Global Workspace Theory, and other materialist frameworks fail to bridge the "explanatory gap" between neural activity and phenomenal experience.

This supports Mind-first ontology.

The Five Arguments

1. Hard Problem of Consciousness (Chalmers)

Question: Why does information processing FEEL like something?

Materialist theories explain:

• Which brain regions activate (correlates)
• How information flows (mechanisms)
• What behaviors result (functions)

But they DON'T explain:

• Why there's a first-person perspective
• What redness IS (not just 700nm light)
• How physical becomes phenomenal

Gap: Neural activity (3rd person) → Subjective experience (1st person) = UNBRIDGED

2. IIT Absurdities (Tononi)

Integrated Information Theory predicts consciousness wherever φ (integrated information) > 0.

Problem: This means:

• Thermostats have φ > 0 (conscious?)
• Bacteria have φ > 0 (aware?)
• Your liver has higher φ than some brain regions (more conscious than you?)

Absurd implications = theory failure

3. Zombie Argument (Chalmers)

Logically possible: Identical neural activity WITHOUT subjective experience.

Philosophical zombie:

• Same neurons, same behavior, same reports
• But "lights are off" — no phenomenal experience

If zombie is conceivable, explanatory gap is REAL (not just ignorance).

4. Binding Problem

You experience unified consciousness (single field of awareness).

But neurons are DISTRIBUTED:

• Color processed in V4
• Motion in V5
• Sound in auditory cortex
• Touch in somatosensory

No mechanism explains unity — no "Cartesian theater" where it all comes together.

5. Quantum Consciousness (Penrose-Hameroff)

If consciousness requires quantum collapse (Orch-OR theory), it's NOT emergent from classical neural computation.

Requires non-material explanation (quantum mechanics ≠ matter alone).

4. If binding problem is solved (mechanism found for unified experience)

Testable Predictions

1. No AI will report first-person experience that survives philosophical zombie test
2. Neural correlates ≠ neural sufficiency (correlation without causation)
3. Materialist theories will proliferate without convergence (theory degeneracy = explanatory failure)
4. Quantum effects in microtubules will be confirmed (Penrose-Hameroff)

Conclusion

You are not your brain. Your brain is your INTERFACE.

Consciousness uses matter (neurons, chemistry) but doesn't EMERGE from it.

Just as software uses hardware but isn't CREATED by transistors — consciousness uses biology but isn't GENERATED by neurons.

Mind is primary. Matter is derivative.
